Preliminary works for a new multi-storey car park at Stockport’s Grand Central will soon start on site, as part of preparations for a new office quarter.

Stockport Council is working with its partner Muse Developments to bring forward a high specification office-led development, including a hotel and improved car parking, which will create an attractive new gateway to the town.

The first phase of development – the construction of a multi-storey car park opposite the station and highway works to Railway Road – will start on site soon. Temporary car parking will be provided for rail users and visitors during the works.

The Council and Muse Developments are inviting the public to an exhibition to find out more about the development and the temporary car parking arrangements. It will be on display from 3pm Thursday 7 February until 5pm Sunday 10 February at Stockport Station. It will be staffed by the project team at the following times:

•             Thursday 7 February        3-6pm

•             Friday 8 February              8am-10am

•             Saturday 9 February         10am-1pm

Councillor Iain Roberts, Executive Member for Economic Development and Regeneration at Stockport Council, said: “The transformation of Grand Central into a destination office quarter and attractive public space is vital to the future success of Stockport town centre. It will reconnect the train centre with the rest of the town centre, create a welcoming environment and bring jobs and investment to the area.

“We are doing everything we can to minimise disruption for businesses, commuters and visitors during construction and we appreciate their support during this time.”

Wes Erlam, Senior Development Surveyor for Muse, added: “The multi-storey car park represents the first significant step in the comprehensive redevelopment of Grand Central and will deliver much improved facilities for residents and visitors to Stockport. I would encourage people to visit the public exhibition to find out more about this exciting project and the temporary changes to car parking.”
